2011/2012 Season

Marat/Sade

By Peter Weiss

Directed by James Levin

October 27, 28, 29 & November 3, 4, 5, 8:15 p.m.

Shoolroy Theatre

“Things change. People change. Time changes everything.”

Or does it? Human history is replete with examples of the indulgences and corruption of those in power. Throughout millennia, kings and priests, emperors and presidents have betrayed the People, stripping them of their dignity and hope.

Then sometimes something happens: a revolt, a rising up of the masses who tip the rulers off the throne. The people then must face another challenge, freedom. To what end? So often, once “freed,” the People’s actions degenerate into the basest elements of what is human.

This work, a seminal play of the “environmental theatre” movements of the 1960s, eviscerates the fourth wall and brings the public to the tightrope tension between controlled behavior and freedom. Hopefully in the production that you attend, a collaboration of college students and “residents” of a local in-patient Youth Center, will stay true to the idea of “controlled behavior.”

We hope all of the actors behave themselves.
