Annual Report, Chief Signal Officer (W 42.1:, D 111.1:)

The position of the Signal Officer of the Army was created in 1860, although the Signal Corps (also known as the Signal Office) was not established until 1863. Although published individually as agency documents, the annual reports of the Chief Signal Officer were made part of the Secretary of War's annual report. (The Chief Signal Officer's reports issued as individual volumes within the Annual Reports, Secretary of War (W 1.1:) are included with that listing as well as listed separately here for ease of access. The volume numbers within the War annual report are listed where available.) The Signal Office remained under the War Department until 1949, when it was reassigned to the Army Department under the Department of Defense (D 111.1:).
