Annual Reports, Social Security Board/Administration (SS 1.1:, FS 3.1:, HE 3.1:)

The Social Security Act of 1935 established the Social Security Board as an independent agency to administer programs for old-age benefits, unemployment compensation, and other public assistance. In 1939 the Board became a part of the Federal Security Agency and was renamed the Social Security Administration in 1946. In 1953, the agency was transferred to the newly created Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, although the FS 3 classification continued to be used through 1969. The Social Security Administration again became an independent agency in 1994. The annual reports began publication with the 1936 volume.
