Official Opinions of Attorneys General (J 1.5:)

Although the office of Attorney-General was established in 1789, it was not until 1870 that a Department of Justice was established with the Attorney-General as its head. This new executive department gathered together in one place all the legal advisers then attached to other departments, as well as the district attorneys, marshals, and other court-related offices. The Official Opinions were published irregularly to cover opinions issued from 1789 onward; however, the first 16 volumes of Opinions were not printed in the Congressional Serial Set.
